SANDRA'S PHILOSOPHY
Our pups are raised in our home and talked to like little people from the moment they are born until they leave our care. Because our pups are constantly exposed to human contact it really makes a difference in their personality and development. I "live" in my office/whelping room whenever I am expecting puppies, and stay with my moms and babies almost 24 hours a day, until they are 2 weeks old, and longer if necessary. The "toy" puppies usually need much more care, and watching for 3 to 4 weeks. All babies are handled for short periods every day, right from birth. Recent studies by veterinarians have proven that this handling and human nurturing helps to develop a dog that will handle stressful situations much better. I also stay so mommy does not accidentally lay on a baby, and to be sure all babies eat every two hours, at the very least. I sleep on the floor right beside their whelping boxes. Communicating with our puppies this way develops their "human" personalities and actions. As their boundaries in the house are expanded they become familiar with the household noises and routine chores, and come to understand they are an important part of the family unit. They "help" us constantly from the morning getting-up routine to the shutting out of the last light, when everyone is "tucked in" for the night.
